Distinction between « Practising advocate » and « Canadian legal advisor »
The Canadian legal advisor may use the prefix “Me” or “Mtre” before his name provided it is followed by the title “Canadian legal advisor” or the initials “c.l.a.” and a reference to the Canadian province or territory where he is legally authorized to practise law.
He may give legal advice and consultations on legal matters involving the law of the Canadian province or territory where he is legally authorized to practise law or involving matters under federal jurisdiction or public international law.
He may prepare and draw up proceedings and plead or act before any tribunal, but only with respect to matters under federal jurisdiction.
Please contact the Barreau du Québec at infobarreau@barreau.qc.ca to know the Canadian province or territory where this Canadian legal advisor is legally authorized to practise law and for more details on the restrictions that apply to this type of permit.

Types of mandates accepted
Legal aid mandates
Legal aid is a public service offered free of charge or for a contribution to financially eligible persons who request it.Limited scope mandates
A limited scope mandate means that the lawyer deals with only part of the case and not the whole case, in order to reduce costs and improve access to justice. For example, the lawyer's intervention may be limited to giving you legal advice or drafting proceedings, but not to representing you in court.Lump sum mandates
A mandate whereby a client agrees with a lawyer to pay a lump sum in exchange for legal services, instead of being billed the hours worked at an hourly rate.Percentage fee mandates
A mandate whereby a lawyer agrees to be compensated based on a percentage of the amount the client receives in the case.Mandate on an hourly rate basis
In this type of mandate, the lawyer bills the client based on the number of hours spent on the file (including the time spent on the phone and writing letters). -
