Adequate knowledge of French
Under section 35 of the Charter of the French Language, professional orders may issue permits only to persons who have adequate knowledge of the official language to practice the profession.
When issuing a permit, professional orders must consider that a person has adequate knowledge if
- they have completed at least three years of full-time secondary or post-secondary education in French;
- they have passed the French-as-a-first-language exam for secondary levels 4 or 5;
- they obtained a high school diploma in Quebec in the 1985-86 school year or later.
