Knowledge exams

These exams are administered by the École du Barreau du Québec (Quebec Bar School).

Exam on legislation, regulations and ethical aspects of the practice of law in Quebec (Législation, réglementation et aspects déontologiques liés à l’exercice de la profession d’avocat au Québec)

This knowledge exam covers the regulatory framework and the code of professional conduct of lawyers and allows the Barreau du Québec to determine whether applicants have the necessary knowledge of the duties and obligations of members of the Barreau du Québec to practice law.

The professional literature recommended for this exam is as follows:

The exam is offered twice a year, in the spring and fall.

You must submit all documents required for registration by April  1st 2025 for the spring 2025 exam and by October  1st 2025 for the fall 2025 exam.

You have the option of taking the eight-day professional training course offered by the École du Barreau du Québec on ethics, professional conduct and professional practice.

You are responsible for registering for theses courses: application to register for the knowledge exams.

Civil law I and related proceedings exam (Droit civil I et procédures afférentes)

The civil law I and related proceedings exam may include topics such as persons, family (including matrimonial regimes and divorce), successions, property, obligations (including extracontractual civil liability) and the Consumer Protection Act.

The professional literature recommended for this exam is as follows:

The exam is offered twice a year, in the spring and fall.

You must submit all documents required for registration by April  1st 2025 for the spring 2025 exam and by October  1st 2025 for the fall 2025 exam.

You have the option of taking the theoretical revision sessions prepared by the École du Barreau du Québec (in French only) before the exam. The online training courses are summary courses on Quebec law covering 12  areas of law (administrative law, family law, business law, individual legal rights, labour law, criminal law, obligations, evidence in civil matters, prior claims and hypothecs, civil procedure, civil liability, bankruptcy and insolvency). The theoretical reminder will be available for a fixed duration depending on your registration period.

Civil law II and related proceedings exam (Droit civil II et procédures afférentes)

The civil law II and related proceedings exam may include topics such as nominate contracts, evidence and procedure, prescription, business, prior claims and hypothecs, publication of rights and private international law.

The professional literature recommended for this exam is as follows:

The exam is offered twice a year, in the spring and fall.

You must submit all documents required for registration by April  1st 2025 for the spring 2025 exam and by October  1st 2025 for the fall 2025 exam.
